Camshaft Oil Seal: Service and Repair


Camshaft oil seals, removing and installing
Special tools and equipment





^ Special tool 3240





^ Installation tool 3241

Removing

Note: If one oil seal is leaking, replace seals on both sides.

^ Remove toothed belt from camshaft sprockets, Refer to Engine; Service and Repair.
^ Align inner part of 3240 with outer part and secure with set screw.





^ Lubricate threaded part of 3240 with oil, apply to seal and with pressure screw into seal as far as possible.
^ Release set screw and turn inner part against camshaft until seal is extracted.
^ Place extractor in vice (at flat surfaces) and remove seal with pliers.
^ Clean sealing surface on camshaft.

Installing

Note: Do not lubricate sealing lip and outside seal ring.

^ Install guide sleeve 3241/2 (from press sleeve 3241/1) on camshaft.





^ Press seal flush into cylinder head with press sleeve 3241/1 and bolt 3241/6.
^ Install toothed belt, Refer to Engine; Service and Repair.

^ Special tool 2085





^ Installation tool 3241

Removing





^ Remove cover -1-.
^ Remove air intake hose for air cleaner -2-.





^ Counter-hold viscous fan pulley with pin wrench 3212 and tighten fan using open end wrench 3312 and torque wrench (fan has left-hand thread).





^ Remove cover -arrows-.
^ Remove right toothed belt cover.
^ Disconnect connector for Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor.





^ Remove bolts -1-.
^ Loosen bolt -2-.
^ Pull toothed belt cover toward front and remove CMP housing.





^ Install bolt from seal extractor 2085/1.





^ Remove seal with seal extractor 2085 and bolt 2085/1.

Installing
^ Clean running and sealing surfaces.
^ Do not oil sealing lip before installing.
^ Install sleeve from tool 3241 on camshaft.





^ Install seal with sleeve 3241/1 and bolt 2085/1 until flush.
^ Install Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor.
^ Connect connector for CMP sensor.

Tightening torques
Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor Housing 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.)
Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor Ring 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.)

Special tools and equipment:





^ Special tool 2085





^ Installation tool 3241

Removing





^ Disconnect connectors from ignition coils -arrows- and move harness aside.
^ Disconnect connector from Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor.
^ Remove CMP sensor housing (10 Nm / 7ft. lbs.).
^ Remove CMP rotor (23 Nm / 17 ft. lbs.) and carefully lever off rotor with screwdriver.





^ Screw in bolt from oil seal extractor 2085/1.





^ Remove seal with seal extractor 2085 and bolt 2085/1

Installing
^ Clean contact and sealing surfaces.

Note: Do not apply oil to sealing lip or outer circumference of seal before installing.

^ Install guide sleeve (from tool set 3241) onto camshaft.





^ Press in seal until flush using press sleeve 3241/1 and bolt 3241/3.
^ Install Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor rotor.
^ Install CMP sensor housing.
^ Connect connector for CMP sensor.

Tightening torques
CMP Sensor Housing 10 Nm (7 ft. lbs.)
CMP Sensor Rotor 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.)

^ Unplug Connector From CMP Sender.
