Valve -1-, -N205- & -2-, -N208 For Cam Adjustment & Valve Check
Valve -1- for camshaft adjustment -N205 and Valve -2- for camshaft adjustment -N208, checking
- Switch ignition on.
- Start Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) and select camshaft adjustment , Refer to "Scan Tool Testing/Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) (Function 03)" Testing and Inspection
Indicated on display
Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Camshaft adjustment 1
When the camshaft adjustment is activated, both solenoid valves should click audibly.
If this result is not obtained, carry out the following tests:
Electrically testing solenoid valves for camshaft adjustment
- Disconnect harness connector from camshaft adjustment solenoid valve which is to be tested.
- Measure resistance between the valve contacts using VAG 1526 multimeter.
Specification: 10 to 18 ohm
If the reading does not match the specification:
- Replace relevant camshaft adjustment solenoid valve.
Checking voltage supply to camshaft adjustment solenoid valves
- Disconnect harness connector from solenoid valve which is to be tested.
- Connect VAG 1527 diode test lamp between engine Ground (GND) and socket 1 (B+) of harness connector using test leads from VAG 1594 connector test kit.
- Operate starter for few seconds. The engine can be allowed to start.
The diode test lamp should light up.
If the diode test lamp does not light up, carry out the following tests:
- Test fuse for camshaft adjustment solenoid valves.
If fuse is OK:
- Check for continuity in wiring between socket 1 on connector and fuel pump relay via fuse.
Checking activation of camshaft adjustment solenoid valves
- Disconnect harness connector from solenoid valve which is to be tested.
- Connect VAG 1527 diode test lamp between sockets 1 (B+) and 2 of relevant solenoid valve harness connector using test leads VAG 1594 connector test kit.
- Start Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) and select camshaft adjustment , Refer to "Scan Tool Testing/Output Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM) (Function 03)" Testing and Inspection
Indicated on display
Output Diagnostic Test Mode ->
Camshaft adjustment 1
When the camshaft timing control is activated the diode test lamp should start flashing.
If the diode test lamp lights up continuously:
- Check for short to Ground (GND) in wiring from socket 2 on connector for relevant camshaft adjustment solenoid valve.
If the diode test lamp does not flash:
- Connect VAG 1598/31 test box to wiring harness for engine control module. DO NOT connect to engine control module itself, Refer to "Scan Tool Testing/Scan Tool Connecting and Initial Checks/Connecting VAG 1598/31 Test Box" Testing and Inspection
- Check for open circuit or short to B+ in wiring of connector for relevant camshaft adjustment solenoid valve.
2-pin connector on Socket on
wiring harness, terminal VAG 1598/31 test box
2 115
Resistance in wiring: max. 1.5 ohms
- Correct any open or short circuits.
If no open or short circuits are identified
- Replace Engine Control Module (ECM).
- Display readiness code, Refer to "Monitors, Trips and/or Drive Cycle (Readiness Codes)/Displaying Readiness Code" Testing and Inspection . If DTC memory was erased generate readiness code, Refer to "Monitors, Trips and/or Drive Cycle (Readiness Codes)/Generating Readiness Code" Testing and Inspection
- If no malfunctions have been identified in any of the tests so far, replace relevant mechanical camshaft adjuster.
