Driveshaft flange at transmission, replacing seal and grooved ball bearing

Removing
^ Transmission installed

Note: The flex joint in front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10 otherwise it may be damaged.

- Remove exhaust system from the clamps.
- Detach rear part of exhaust system from hangers and remove.

Note: A second technician is required to remove the rear part of exhaust system.





- Unbolt heat shield for driveshaft -arrows-.
- Remove bolts at flange of transmission/drive axle.
- Push driveshaft to rear final drive together. The constant velocity joints can be adjusted axially.





- Secure driveshaft -1- with wire (arrow) to heat shield.
- Place container under the transmission.
- Unscrew rear oil drain plug (at end cover) and drain gear oil.
- Unscrew bolts attaching bearing housing.

Note: Bearing housing is pressed slightly off end cover by spiral spring when mounting bolts are loosened.





- Pull flanged shaft together with bearing housing and vibration damper off end cover.
- Remove bearing housing.
- Remove circlip from flanged shaft.





- Press out flanged shaft.





- Pull out flanged shaft seal.
- Thoroughly clean seat for seal.





- Press out grooved ball bearing.

Installing





- Press grooved ball bearing into bearing housing.





- Lightly oil diameter of seal -B-.
- Install seal together with washer -A- Part No. 016 311 391 B (thickness 1.7 mm) onto drift 2005.
- Installation position: Open side of seal faces toward transmission.





- Drive in flanged shaft seal.
- Remove washer after inserting seal.
- Pack space between sealing and dust lips with sealing grease G 052 128 Al.





- Press in flanged shaft.
- Install circlip onto flanged shaft.
- Lightly oil O-ring and insert into groove of bearing housing.
- Insert dished washer and shims into bearing housing.
^ Installation position.

- Install spiral spring onto flanged shaft.
- Tighten bolts attaching bearing housing in stages and diagonally.
- Bolt on driveshaft.
- Top up oil in transmission and check oil level.
