Oil seal for drive flange/drive shaft, replacing
(Transmission installed)
Special tools and equipment
^ VW 681 Extractor lever
^ 30-505 Insertion mandrel
^ 30-506 B Press tool
^ VAG 1306 Drip tray
Removing
- Pay attention to general repair instructions.
- Place drip tray VAG 1306 underneath and drain gear oil.
- Separate exhaust system at clamp -1-
- Unscrew heat shield for drive shaft from cover of Torsion differential arrows-.
- Unscrew drive shaft from transmission.
Drive shaft, removing and installing.
- Re-insert speed nut -arrow- slightly and secure drive shaft to stud with wire.
- Place drip tray VAG 1306 below cap.
Note: Oil escapes when cap -B- is taken off
- Remove circlip -A-.
- Install an M8 bolt into threaded hole of cap.
- Remove cap by means of bolt.
- Expand circlip and pull out drive flange.
- Pull out oil seal for drive flange using VW 681.
Installing
- Slightly oil circumference of oil seal.
- Drive in new oil seal for drive flange 2 mm below surface of housing, taking care not to tilt it.
- Fill space between sealing lip and dust lip with sealing grease G 052 128 Al.
- Insert drive flange.
- Insert drive flange circlip at same time as shaft.
- Circlip must be properly positioned in groove.
- Insert cap with a new O-ring and secure.
- Screw drive shaft to transmission.
Drive shaft, removing and installing.
- Topping up manual transmission with oil and checking oil level.
- Align exhaust system stress-free
