Outer Constant Velocity Joint, Checking

Outer constant velocity joint, checking
Joint must be disassembled when very dirty. Grease must be replaced or if contact surfaces of balls are to be checked for wear or damage.

Disassembling

- Before disassembling, mark position of ball hub in relation to ball cage and housing with an electric marker or grindstone (see arrow).
- Swivel ball hub and ball cage.
- Take out balls one after another.

- Turn cage until two cage windows (arrow) make contact with link body.
- Lift out cage with hub.

- Swivel a segment of hub to a cage window.
- Tilt hub and remove from cage.

Checking
The 6 balls of each joint belong to a tolerance group. Check stub axles, hub, cage and balls for pitting and score grooves. Excessive torsional play in the joint becomes apparent through load change jolts. If this occurs, replace joint. The joint does not have to be replaced if balls display smooth spots and tracks.

Assembling
- Press required quantity of grease into joint body.
- Insert ball and hub in joint body.

Note: Take care to insert cage the right way round.

- Press in balls opposite one another in succession, thereby reproducing former position of ball hub in relation to ball cage and joint body.
