Inner CV joint, servicing

Disassembling inner CV joint
- Clamp drive axle into vise.
Use protective jaws for vise.





- Hit cover and drive off using a copper or brass mandrel.





- Remove securing ring.
- Remove drive axle grease and mark installation position of CV joint to drive axle.





- Clamp drive axle on CV joint in vise as shown in illustration.
- Have a second mechanic hold drive axle horizontally so CV joint is not damaged.
- Bend up edge -arrow- of cap slightly using a small flat chisel.
- Hit cap and drive off using a copper or brass mandrel.





- Press off CV joint from axle.
- Remove cap and CV boot.





Installing inner constant velocity joint
- Apply sealant D 454 300 A2 -shaded areas- on clean surfaces of cover or cap.
Sealant bead: continuous, 2 to 3 mm diameter
Guide inside in area of holes -arrow-.
Shaft, CV boot and contact surface of cap must be free of grease!
- Slide new CV boot with cap onto shaft.
- Put 85 grams of drive axle grease into boot.
- Secure CV joint, for example using adhesive tape, to prevent it falling apart.





- Press on CV joint.

Note:
^ Place ball hub with chamfer on inside diameter (splines) onto drive axle.
^ Use special tools shown in illustration.
^ Press block 40-204A and tensioning area of drive axle must be free of grease.

- Install securing ring.
- Press 35 grams drive axle grease through ball tracks into joint.
- Align cap with bolts (arrow) to bolt holes.
A very exact alignment must be performed because an alignment is no longer possible after driving on.





- Drive cap on using plastic mallet.
- Wipe off escaping sealant.
- Align cap with bolts (arrow) to bolt holes.
