Inner CV joint, servicing
Disassembling inner CV joint
- Clamp drive axle into vise.
Use protective jaws for vise for this.
- Pry off locking cap e.g. using a screwdriver.
- Removing sealing ring (arrow)
- Drive off cap from CV boot using a brass or copper mandrel
Tensioning clamp must not be loosened.
- Remove securing ring
- Press off inner constant velocity joint using special tools shown in illustration.
- Pull CV boot for inner constant velocity joint from shaft.
Installing inner constant velocity joint
- Apply sealant -hatched surface- onto clean inner surface of cap for CV boot.
Sealant bead: continuous, 2 to 3 mm diameter
Guide inside in area of holes -arrow-.
Use sealant 454 300 A2
- Slide CV boot onto shaft.
Shaft, CV boot and contact surface of cap must be free of grease!
- Press on joint until it stops.
Note:
^ Chamfer on inner diameter of ball hub (splines) must face contact shoulder of drive axle.
^ Use special tools shown in illustration.
^ 40-204A press block and tensioning area of drive axle must be free of grease.
- Install securing ring
- Make sure circlip is properly seated.
Note: Always replace sealing rings
- Put 85 grams of drive axle grease into boot.
Do not damage sealant bead.
- Align cap with bolts (arrow) to bolt holes.
A very exact alignment must be performed because an alignment is no longer possible after driving on.
- Drive cap on using plastic mallet
- Wipe off escaping sealant.
- Put 30 grams of drive axle grease through ball tracks into constant velocity joint.
- De-grease contact surface for sealing ring.
- Remove adhesive foil from seal and adhere in constant velocity joint.
- Align cap to bolt holes.
A very exact alignment must be performed because an alignment is no longer possible after pressing on.
- Press on cap using special tools shown.
- Position CV boot between arrows.
