Shift Cable: Testing and Inspection
Selector lever cable, checking and adjusting
Special tools and workshop equipment required
^ Removal lever 80-200
^ Socket and key T40031
Work preparations
- Release quick-fasteners -2- and -3- and take off rear sound insulation.
Vehicles with 4-cylinder engine
- Remove cover plates on underside of vehicle inner left -2- and inner right -1-.
- Remove rear crossmember on underside of vehicle -1 ... 4-.
- Remove front crossmember on underside of vehicle -1 ... 6-.
- Loosen clamp (arrows) on exhaust system and disconnect exhaust pipe.
Note: The flexible pipe connection (de-coupling element) on the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10 * - otherwise it can be damaged.
- Remove heat shield below shift mechanism.
Checking
- Shift selector lever into "P" position.
- Unscrew bolts -2- and remove mounting base -3- for selector lever cable.
- Use removal lever 80-200 to pry selector lever cable -A- from selector shaft lever (arrow).
- Shift selector lever from "P" to "D1".
- Selector lever mechanism and selector lever cable must move freely. If necessary replace selector lever cable or service selector lever mechanism.
- Shift selector lever into "P" position.
Adjusting
- Selector lever cable -5- and mounting base -3- for selector lever cable must be installed.
- Unscrew nut -1- and push support bracket -4- up and out of mounting base -3-.
- Take hold of selector lever cable and push selector shaft lever -1- forward to stop into position "D" (arrow).
- Tighten nut -1- to fasten support bracket -4- in this position to mounting base -3-.
- Remove shift mechanism cover.
- Insert special tool T40031 through access bore in shift mechanism to engage clamping screw at rear of selector lever cable. Loosen screw approximately 1 turn.
Note:
^ Loosen clamping screw approximately I turn only - do NOT remove completely.
^ Clamping screw can only be accessed with selector lever in position 'D "
^ With clamping screw loosened, selector lever must remain in position 'D "
- Check that selector lever is set accurately in position 'D". To do so, push selector lever slightly toward driver's seat (arrow -A-).
Note: Do NOT pull selector lever back or forward while adjusting as this would distort the alignment
- Using special tool T40031, tighten clamping screw in this position to 13 Nm.
- Install shift mechanism cover
- Install exhaust system and align it to be free of stress
