Right flange shaft oil seal, replacing

Removing flange shaft (right side)
^ Transmission installed
^ Remove right front wheel.
^ Loosen bolts and release quick-fasteners -1 3- and take off front and rear sound insulation.
^ If equipped, loosen bolt -1- on sound insulation cover above right drive shaft.
^ Disengage retainer -2- and remove sound insulation cover.
^ Remove heat shield for right drive shaft.
^ Remove right drive shaft.
- Unbolt flange shaft bearing bracket (arrows).
- Place container under transmission.
- Pullout flange shaft together with bearing bracket.
Removing oil seal
- Remove circlip (arrow -A-) for grooved ball bearing.
- Press flange shaft out of flange shaft bearing bracket.
- Pull flange shaft oil seal out of bearing bracket with VW 681.
Removing grooved ball bearing
- Press grooved ball bearing out of bearing bracket.
Installing grooved ball bearing
- Press new grooved ball bearing into bearing bracket.
Installing oil seal
- Lightly lubricate outer circumference and sealing lip of oil seal with axle oil.
^ Installation position: open side of seal towards transmission
- Drive in new oil seal for right-hand flange shaft to a depth of 5.5 mm below outer surface of bearing bracket using 2062, keep seal straight when installing.
Note: If the old flange shaft is reinstalled after the repair, the oil seal must be driven in to a depth of approximately 6.5 mm so that the new seal does not run on the same contact surface as the old one.
- Press bearing bracket with grooved ball bearing onto flange shaft.
- Insert circlip (arrow -A-).
Installing flange shaft (right side)
- Replace O-ring (arrow -A-) in flange shaft bearing bracket.
- Push spring -C- with cap facing outward into drilling at end of flange shaft (arrow).
- Insert flange shaft into transmission.
Note: Make sure that spring -C- remains in flange shaft when inserting, otherwise it might drop into the transmission.
- Bolt on flange shaft bearing bracket (arrows), tightening torque 25 Nm.
- Install drive shaft
- Install heat shield for drive shaft.
- Check oil level in front final drive.
