Sealing Ring In Drive Pinion, Replacing
Sealing ring in drive pinion, replacing
(Transmission installed)
Special tools and equipment
^ 3403 thrust piece
Note: An inspection opening is provided on the left side of the intermediate flange to check for oil leaks (arrow) for the sealing ring in drive pinion and the sealing ring in intermediate flange.
If oil escapes at this inspection opening, this sealing ring must be replaced.
Removing
- Remove center differential.
- Removing intermediate flange for front final drive.
- Remove intermediate pinion -2- for front final drive from transfer housing.
- Pull drive pinion -3- from output shaft.
WARNING: Do not reinstall spur gears that have fallen to the ground. The transmission must be replaced in this case.
Output pinion -1- remains on the drive pinion.
- Drive out sealing ring using drift.
Installing
Installation is reverse of removal, noting the following:
- Coat outer edge and sealing lip of oil seal with gear oil.
- Slide sealing ring onto 3403 thrust piece.
- Drive sealing ring in up to 3403 thrust piece stop.
Contact surface -A- of thrust piece must lie against drive pinion -B-.
- Fill area between sealing lip and dust lip halfway with sealing grease G 052 128 Al.
- Completely cover splines on end of shaft (arrow) with insulating tape without creasing or overlapping the tape, to prevent damage to sealing ring when sliding on drive pinion.
- Install drive pinion on center of output shaft. (installation position)
Note: If installing the intermediate flange on the output shaft carelessly, the sealing lips of the sealing ring can be damaged.
- Slide drive pinion -3- together with the intermediate pinion -2- into final drive housing up to stop (tapered roller bearing).
Observe installation position of spur gears (pinion):
Wheel identification (arrows) point outward, away from final drive.
- Installing intermediate flange for front final drive.
- Install center differential.
