Explanatory notes on PR numbers
The shock absorber combination installed in the vehicle can be seen from the corresponding PR number on the vehicle data sticker.

Example of a vehicle data sticker
- -A- indicates PR no. for front axle
- -B- indicates PR no. for rear axle
The vehicle data sticker can be found in the spare wheel well and in the customer's service schedule.
The PR. no. enables you to find the correct shock absorber combination in the spare parts film.

The PR no for suspension versions can be seen in the illustration -see arrow-.
1 BA = Standard suspension
1 BE, 1 BV = Sports suspension
1 BR = Comfort (rough road) suspension

Fig. 1 Removing coil spring
- Clamp suspension strut in vice
- Pre-tension coil spring with tensioner VAG 1752/1 and spring plate VAG 1752/4 until upper spring plate is free.

Fig. 2 Removing coil spring
- In doing so pay attention to correct positioning -arrow- of coil spring in adapter VAG 1752/6.

Fig. 3 Removing coil spring
- Unfasten collared nut from piston rod using special tools -T10001/3-, T10001/11 and T10001/7.
- Remove suspension strut components and pre-tensioned coil spring with tensioner VAG 1752/1.

Fig. 4 Replacing shock absorber
- Remove protective cap -1- and lower spring seat -2-.
- Mark installation position of lower spring plate in relation to shock absorber.
- Loosen spring plate -3- using a plastic hammer and lift up to remove.

Fig. 5 Installation position of lower spring plate
A - Screwing axis of shock absorber/track control link
I = Left, B = 65° ± 2°
II = Right, C = 87° ± 2°
- Knock spring plate down and in with aid of mark which you produced. If installing a new shock absorber, transfer mark from old shock absorber. Pay attention to different installation positions on left and right. Cut edge of spring plate -arrow- must allow access to body.

Fig. 6 Installing coil spring
- Mount spring plate, lower spring seat and protective cap.
- Position pre-tensioned coil spring with tensioner VAG 1752/4 on lower spring seat, ensuring that end of spring winding makes contact with stop -arrow-.
- Permissible deviation: ± 2°.

Fig. 7 Installation position of upper spring seat
Position mounting bracket with spring seat on pre-tensioned spring such that spring seat makes contact with end of spring winding -arrow-.
Permissible deviation: ± 2°.

Fig. 8 Installing coil spring
- Install individual parts of suspension strut. Make sure that end of spring makes contact with stop of upper spring seat.
- Tighten collared nut with special tool, 60 Nm - Go to Fig 3

Note: Do not loosen spring yet

Installation position of mounting bracket
- Clamp suspension strut vertically in tool VAG 1752/2 using a spring tensioner.

- Release locking lever and turn upper spring plate until scale of suspension strut holder VAG 1752/2 points to .
- Make sure that ends of spring make contact with stops of spring support and spring seat.
- Lock locking lever.
