Power steering gear, removing and installing

Removing
- Remove plenum chamber cover.

CAUTION!: Before beginning repairs on the electrical system:
^ Obtain the anti-theft radio security code.
^ Switch the ignition off.
^ Disconnect the battery Ground (GND) strap.
^ On vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar, switch-off the emergency (backup) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module prior to disconnecting vehicle battery.
^ After reconnecting vehicle battery, re-code and check operation of anti-theft radio. Also check operation of clock and power windows according Owner's Manual.
^ After reconnecting vehicle battery on vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar, switch-on the emergency (backup) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module
- Remove battery if necessary.

WARNING! Move steering wheel to center position and do not turn it while performing repair work, as otherwise coil connector of airbag unit could be damaged.

- Pull out ignition key with steering wheel in center position.
- Move steering wheel slightly to engage steering lock.
- Removing driver's storage compartment





- Loosen bolt -arrow-.
Tightening torque: 30 Nm
- Secure steering column to stop it sliding apart

Note:
^ Always install new sealing collar if collar is damaged.
^ Make sure sealing collar is properly positioned.





- Pinch off suction and return lines with hose clamps -3094-.
- Unbolt front wheels.





- Loosen bolts of tie rod end and press tie rod end downward and out of way.
- Unscrew hex bolts -3- and -4-

Note: Always replace nut -4-.

- Pull out tie rod





- Loosen bolted joint to release suspension strut from track control link.
Tightening torque: 90 Nm

Note: Use a new nut.

- Position suspension strut in front of track control link as seen in direction of travel.





- Unscrew speed nut -arrow-.
- Pry out clips and remove cover.
- Disengage cable.
- Remove plastic cover.
- On 6-Cyl. engines, remove shield on driver's side.
Tightening torque: 2 Nm





- Loosen bolt -1- by approximately one turn.
- Unscrew bolts -2- and -3-.
- Swivel steering gear on driver's side forward in direction of travel.
- Place drip tray in position to collect hydraulic fluid.





- Unscrew banjo bolt for return hose (22 mm) from steering gear.

Note: With certain versions of engine/transmission, the banjo bolt can only be unscrewed from within the wheel housing.





- Unscrew banjo bolt for pressure hose (19 mm) from steering gear.

Note: With certain versions of engine/transmission, the banjo bolt can only be unscrewed from within the wheel housing.





- Unfasten attachment points of steering gear -1-.
- Take out steering gear through left wheel housing (requires second mechanic).

Note: Take care to ensure that steering gear pinion does not damage bulkhead cover.

Installing





- Center removed steering gear with -VAG 1907-.
- To do so, unscrew hex socket-head bolt -1- from steering gear.
- Move rack until centering mark on rack -arrow- and threaded hole -2- are aligned.
- Screw in VAG 1907 hand-tight.
- Coat steering gear in area of bulkhead cover with G 052 745 A3.
- Position steering gear on plenum chamber.

Note: Make sure that threads and contact surfaces of bolts are free from oil and grease.





- Insert bolt -1- but do not tighten yet.
- Swivel steering gear on driver's side forward in direction of travel.





- Screw on return hose and tighten banjo bolt -2- -22- to 47 Nm.
- Screw on pressure hose and tighten banjo bolt -19- to 40 Nm.
With certain versions of engine/transmission, banjo bolts can only be tightened from within the wheel housing.

Note: Pressure and return hoses must not touch one another or be in contact with other components.

- Re-insert bulkhead cover.

Note:
^ Gasket must be replaced if damaged.
^ Make sure gasket is properly positioned.





- Insert bolt -2- but do not tighten yet.
- Insert bolt -3- and tighten to 65 Nm.
- Tighten bolts -1- and -2- to 68 Nm.
- Release steering lock.
- Move steering wheel to center position, then attach universal joint to steering pinion.





- Loosen bolt -arrow-
Tightening torque: 30 Nm
- Tighten tensioning bolt nut for tie rod end to 50 Nm.
Use a new nut





- Tighten bolt -2- to 40 Nm
Use a new nut
- Tighten bolt -1- to 90 Nm
Use a new nut
Bonded rubber bushings can only be turned to a limited extent. The bolted joint of suspension strut/track control link is therefore only to be tightened when the vehicle is standing on the ground.





- Screw tool VAG 1907 onto steering gear.
1. Hex socket-head bolt
2. Threaded hole in steering gear
- Seal steering gear with hex socket-head bolt -1-.
Tightening torque 22 Nm.
- Install driver's storage compartment.
- Install wheel housing trim.
- When steering gear installation is complete, remove hose clamps -3094-.
- Install battery and, if applicable, decode radio.
- Check hydraulic fluid level.
- Bleed steering system.
- Check steering system for leaks.
- Check wheel alignment
