Service

Service

Preliminary diagnosis reveals an actual low engine oil pressure condition. The engine oil level is correct and the oil pressure switch, instrument cluster, wiring harness, etc. are functioning.

1. Place the vehicle in "Service Position."

2. Remove cylinder head cover.

3. Remove plastic oil deflectors from the top of intake camshaft.

4. Inspect all camshafts bearings (remove only one cap at a time) for damage.

If no camshaft bearings are damaged, the complete engine must be repaired as described in the Engine Repair Guidelines section.

Note:
For Canada: Engine replacement requires inspection and authorization by the AASM/TFM.

For USA: Engine replacement requires that all camshaft bearing caps be submitted to the Audi Warranty Test Center.

Engine Repair Guidelines

This section applies if none of the camshaft bearings are damaged:

1. Inspect the camshaft chain tensioner-adjuster for visible damage on the pads in contact with the chain. Replace the tensioner-adjuster if the pads are damaged.

2. Drain the engine oil and remove the oil pan.

3. Visually inspect the engine oil pump suction line strainer for obstructions. (Use background lighting if necessary.)

^ If the engine oil pump suction line strainer is not obstructed: Further diagnosis is required to determine the root cause of low engine oil pressure. Repair as necessary. (Always refer to ElsaWeb Repair Manual for additional information.)

^ If engine oil pump suction line strainer is obstructed by solid particles:

a. Replace the oil pump suction line or the oil pump for AEB and ATW engines only (the engine cleaner will not remove any of the obstructions).

b. Install oil pan, following ElsaWeb Repair Manual procedures. The oil pan will not be removed again.

c. Clean the intake camshaft plastic oil deflectors (previously removed).

d. Install cylinder head cover without oil deflectors. The cylinder head cover must later be removed again.

4. Replace the oil feed line of the turbocharger.

5. Visually inspect the interior of oil filter holder through crankcase ventilation system line opening (at top of holder). If excessive oil deposits are found, clean as necessary.

For Engine code AEB, ATW

^ Replace crankcase ventilation system hoses, pipes and pressure regulating valve depending on engine code. (See circled] items in Figure 2 and compare to latest illustration in ETKA.)

^ Replace O-rings, clamps and miscellaneous fasteners only as necessary.

For Engine code AMB up to VIN 8E 3 040000, AWM

^ Replace crankcase ventilation system hoses, pipes and pressure regulating valve depending on engine code. (See circled items in Figure 3 and compare to latest illustration in ETKA.)

^ Replace O-rings, clamps and miscellaneous fasteners only as necessary.

For Engine code AMB from VIN 8E 3 040001

^ Replace crankcase ventilation system hoses, pipes and pressure regulating valve depending on engine code. (See circled items in Figure 4 and compare to latest illustration in ETKA.)

^ Replace O-rings, clamps and miscellaneous fasteners only as necessary.

For Engine code AEB, ATW, AWM, AMB up to VIN 8E 3 040000

^ Replace crankcase ventilation valve and hoses.

^ Replace O-rings, clamps and miscellaneous fasteners only as necessary.

For vehicles up to MY03, VIN 8E 3 100001

^ Inspect and replace brake booster suction jet pump (circled in Figure 6) if clogged.

^ Replace O-rings, clamps and miscellaneous fasteners only as necessary.

6. To remove coked engine oil deposits, the engine is flushed using 6 quarts of engine cleaner.

a. Remove the oil filter.

b. Install the oil filter adapter on the oil filter holder.

c. Connect the oil lines from the external oil filter assembly to oil filter adapter.

d. Insert a new oil filter element on the canister of the external oil filter assembly.

e. Partially fill (approximately 1 quart) the canister of the external oil filter assembly with the engine cleaner. Do not overfill.

f. Attach the filled canister to the external oil filter assembly and tighten securely.

g. Hook up the external oil filter assembly to the engine hood latch.

h. Pour the remaining 5 quarts of engine cleaner (total amount 6 quarts into the engine through the oil filler cap.

Note:
For the following repair steps, the engine must be able to run in neutral on the hoist for an extended period of time, but it is not yet necessary to restore the vehicle to full driving conditions. Ensure engine and transmission are adequately supported.

7. With vehicle on hoist, transmission in neutral and wheels raised off the ground, start the engine and verify on the pressure gauge of the external oil filter assembly that appropriate engine oil pressure is obtained. (See ElsaWeb Repair Manual for specifications).

Note:
Ensure adequate ventilation to engine and unrestricted airflow to coolant radiator.

8. Run engine in neutral at approximately 3000 RPM for 30 minutes. (Tool VAG 1788/10 can be used for this purpose.)

Note:
Do not leave engine running unattended! Monitor engine oil pressure throughout procedure. If engine oil pressure drops, check the oil pump suction line strainer for obstructions.

9. After 30 minutes, turn the engine off.

10. While the engine is still hot, immediately drain the engine cleaner from the engine.

Note:
After the engine flush, the engine cleaner must be drained from the engine immediately, or damage to engine gaskets can occur.

11. Empty and set aside the external oil filter canister assembly.

12. Remove the oil filter adapter.

13. Install a new engine oil filter.

14. Fill the engine with fresh oil. As an exception and for this specific step only, inexpensive engine oil with correct viscosity must be used.

15. Run engine at idle for 15 minutes.

16. After 15 minutes, turn the engine OFF.

17. While the engine is still hot, drain the oil from the engine.

Warning:
After the engine flush, allow the engine to cool to safely continue with the repair.

18. Remove cylinder head cover.

19. Install plastic oil deflectors on top of intake camshaft.

20. Install the cylinder head cover following ElsaWeb Repair Manual procedures. The cover will not be removed again.

21. Install a new engine oil filter again and fill the engine with fresh oil.

22. Restore the engine and the vehicle to full driving conditions.

Tip: Always use engine oil that conforms to Audi quality standard VW 502 00.

Engine Replacement Guidelines

If at least one camshaft bearing is damaged, proceed with the following:

1. Replace the complete engine using factory remanufactured parts in accordance with warranty policy.

Note:
Before installing a previously used toothed belt exhaust camshaft sprocket on a new engine, visually inspect for fractures and damage, especially in the indexing key area. If fractures or damage is found, replace the sprocket.

2. Replace turbocharger.

3. Replace oil feed and oil return lines of the turbocharger.

4. Replace crankcase ventilation system hoses, pipes, pressure regulating valve and brake booster suction jet pump as described in the Engine Repair Guidelines section.

5. Replace the oil filter holder.

6. Replace the engine oil cooler.

7. Install new engine oil filter, fill engine with fresh oil and restore the engine and the vehicle to full driving conditions.

Tip: Always use engine oil that conforms to Audi quality standard VW 502 00.
