Brake pads, removing and installing Special tools and equipment


^ 3272 resetting and extracting tool
^ V.A.G 1331 Torque wrench





Removing

Note:
Mark brake pads to be reused on removal. Reinstall in their original position to prevent uneven braking!

- Raise vehicle.
- Remove wheels.
- Secure brake disc with one wheel bolt.










- Remove securing bolts from brake caliper housing, when doing this counter-hold on guide pins.

Note:
To replace bottom bolts, disengage brake cable.

- Take off brake caliper housing and lay to one side so that the weight of the brake caliper does not stress or damage the brake hose.

- Remove brake pads.
- Take out retaining springs.
- Clean brake caliper housing, in particular the contact surface for the brake pad.

Note:
In order to remove the brake disc, the brake carrier must be removed.



Use methylated spirit only for cleaning brake caliper housing.


Note:
Press piston back into the cylinder with resetting too4 before inserting new brake pads. Draw off brake fluid from the reservoir with a bleeder bottle before pressing piston back. Otherwise brake fluid which was used to top off brake fluid reservoir; may run out and cause damage.

WARNING
Brake fluid is poisonous and must on no account be siphoned by mouth through a hose
.








Installing

Use methylated spirit only for cleaning brake caliper housing.

- Turn special tool -3272 clockwise to screw in piston.









- Insert pad retaining springs.
- Insert brake pads.










- Make sure the brake pads are located correctly in anti-rattle springs (arrows).

Note:
^ The repair kit includes four self-locking hex bolts which must be installed.

- Secure brake caliper housing with new self-locking bolts.
- Make sure that brake hose is not twisted when installed.
- Bolt on brake caliper housing: 35 Nm



Note:
^ Each time after replacing the brake pads, depress the brake pedal firmly several times with vehicle stationary so that the brake pads are properly seated in their normal operating position.
- Install wheels to 120 Nm.
- Check brake fluid level and top off if necessary.
