Brake pads, removing and installing

Special tools and equipment

^ VAG 1331 Torque wrench

Removing
- Raise vehicle.
- Remove wheels.

Note: Mark brake pads to be reused on removal. Reinstall in their original position to prevent uneven braking!

- Take off the caps -arrows-.

- On vehicles equipped with brake pad wear indicators disconnect connector -1-
- Slightly lift up the positioning tag on the lower part of the connector -2- and then turn it through 90°.
- Pull the lower half of the connector out of the holder.

- Lever off brake pad retaining spring from brake caliper housing with a screwdriver and remove.

- Unscrew both guide pins and remove from brake caliper.
- Take off brake caliper housing and lay to one side so that the weight of the brake caliper does not stress or damage the brake hose.
- Take brake pads out of brake caliper housing or from brake carrier.

Installing

- Press back piston.

Only use methylated spirits to clean the brake caliper housing.

Note: Before inserting new brake pads, press piston back into the cylinder with resetting tool. Before pressing the piston back, draw off brake fluid from the reservoir with a bleeder bottle. Otherwise brake fluid which was used to top up the brake fluid reservoir, may run out and cause damage.

WARNING: Brake fluid is poisonous and must on no account be siphoned by mouth through a hose.

- Install brake pad with retaining spring into brake caliper housing (piston).

Note: The inner pad (with expansion spring) has an arrow. The arrow should point in the direction of rotation of the brake disc when travailing forward. If installed incorrectly this may cause noise problems.

- Pull off protective sheet on backing plate of outer brake pad.
- Install outer brake pad onto brake carrier.
- Secure brake caliper housing to brake carrier with both guide pins to 25 Nm.
- Install both protective caps.
- Insert retaining spring into brake caliper housing.

Notes: After inserting the retaining spring into the two holes, press it under the brake carrier. If incorrectly installed, it is not possible to adjust the wear of the outer pad, and the pedal travel will be increased as a result.

After replacing the brake pads, depress pedal firmly several times with the vehicle stationary, so that the brake pads are properly seated in their normal operating position.

- Check brake fluid level and top up if necessary.
