Longitudinal Control Arm Removal and Installation

Removing and installing
- Refer also to Longitudinal and Lateral Control Arms, Overview.

Removing
- First remove spring





- Disengage parking brake cable at brake caliper.
- Remove parking brake cable from longitudinal control arm.
- Remove drive axle.





- Unclip wire for sensor from bracket (arrow).
- Remove ABS speed sensor from longitudinal control arm housing.





- Remove bracket for brake line from longitudinal control arm.
- Unclip brake line from bracket - 1 -.





- Remove mounting bolts - 1 - from brake caliper and remove brake caliper.
- Engage brake caliper at mount.
- Remove Phillips - head screw for brake disc and remove brake disc.





- Remove bolt - 2 - for lateral control arm.
3 - Upper lateral control arm
4 - Lower lateral control arm
5 - Longitudinal control arm





- Place transmission lift under longitudinal control arm
- Remove bolt for suspension strut.
- Mark installation position of mounting bracket at mount.





- Remove mounting bracket from mount (arrows).
- Disassemble brake line for this if necessary.

Mounting bracket must be modified if longitudinal control arm is being replaced.
Installation position of mounting bracket must be adjusted as described.

Installing
Remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.
The bolted connections for bonded rubber bushings must only be tightened with the vehicle standing on its wheels and with the vehicle stationary.
Otherwise, the rubber bushing will be stressed and have a shortened service life.
After installing, camber and toe setting must be checked on an alignment stand.

Tightening torques:
Brake caliper at longitudinal control arm 65 Nm
Mounting bracket at longitudinal control arm 90 Nm
Mounting bracket at mount 75 Nm
Lateral control arm at longitudinal control arm 70 Nm + 90°
Always use new nuts and bolts
Suspension strut to longitudinal control Arm 100 Nm + 90°
Inner joint of drive axle at drive flange 40 Nm
12 - point nut at wheel hub
- Pre-tighten new 12 - point nut to 300 Nm, then back off one turn.
- Re-tighten to 50 Nm then turn additional 45°.
