Lifter / Lash Adjuster: Service and Repair






COMPONENT NOTES AND INFORMATION

NOTE: Always replace all seals and gaskets.

1 Bearing cap
- Installation position, refer to Replacement. Service and Repair
2 Torque to: 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.)
3 Camshaft
- Removing and installing, refer to Replacement. Service and Repair
- Checking axial clearance, refer to Procedures. Testing and Inspection
- Maximum allowable play: 0.01 mm (0.0004 inch)
4 Valve stem oil seal
- Always replace
- Changed from earlier version
- Replacing, refer to Replacement. Service and Repair
5 Cylinder head
- Resurfacing cylinder head, refer to Resurfacing
- Refacing valve seats, refer to Refacing. Service and Repair
6 Oil seal
- Always replace
- Replacing, refer to Replacement. Service and Repair
- Toothed camshaft drive belt, removing and installing, refer to Replacement. Service and Repair
7 Exhaust valve
- Changed from earlier version
- Stem diameter 7 mm (0.27 inch)

8 Hydraulic valve lifter Oil contact surfaces before installing
- Store with cam lobe contact surface facing downward

9 Intake valve
- Changed from earlier version

REMOVAL
1. Removing ribbed drive belt.
2. Remove toothed timing belt, refer to Timing Components.
3. Remove valve cover.
4. On left side cylinder head, remove housing for camshaft position sensor.
5. On right side cylinder head, remove plug/cover on cylinder head.
6. On either cylinder head, remove toothed belt camshaft sprocket.





7. Remove camshaft bearing caps -2- and -3-.
8. Gradually and evenly loosen nuts for bearing caps-1-and-4-, alternating in diagonal sequence, then remove caps.
9. Remove camshaft.

NOTE:
^ DO NOT allow bearing caps to become mixed up.
^ Identify as necessary using a felt marker.

INSTALLATION

CAUTION:
^ After installing new or re-installing old lifters, and after installing the camshaft(s), the engine must not be started for at least 30 minutes. Otherwise the valves could strike the pistons.
^ After working on the valve train and lifters, crank the engine carefully by hand, at least two full revolutions, to make sure that the valves do not strike the pistons.

1. Install bearing caps -1- and -4-.
2. Gradually and evenly tighten bearing cap nuts, alternating in diagonal sequence.
3. Install bearing caps -2- and -3-.
4. Tighten all bearing caps to: 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.).
