Introducing Audi Service "Fuel Quality" Brochure

Automatic Shipment AL-13-87
Number:

87-01
The attached sample brochure directs its message to Audi Service Customers to inform them of the importance of fuel quality and its effect on performance and driveability.

It may be distributed to your customers in several recommended ways:

^ Place in the customer waiting area as informative reading.

^ As a reference for service Advisors to inform customers of the significance of fuel quality.

^ Supplement Direct Mail promotions such as service reminders.

This introduction was timed to correspond with the release of the "Teck Talk" Driveability Reference Cards and the Miller "Gas Chek" Special Tool. (Service Circular/Tools-Equipment 7-24-87.)

Have you experienced intermittent driveability problems such as hard starting, poor performance or engine knock? You might consider reading this brochure!

Everyone expects his car to start easily, warm up rapidly and run smoothly under all operating conditions. This is a tall order if you consider the varying geographic and climatic conditions in which we operate our vehicles. Knowing a few things about gasoline could save you some time and money.

Gasolines differ from one manufacturer to another. The differences might be slight but enough to cause you some frustration. A hard starting or performance problem might be remedied by simply changing the type of gasoline.

One of the most important properties of gasoline is volatility, which is the ability of gasoline to change from a liquid to a vapor. Volatility affects fuel economy, performance, and starting capability.

A gasoline should be blended so the correct volatility for a given area and climate is obtained. For example, the volatility of winter gasoline is higher to reduce hard starting and driveability problems during cold weather. The volatility of summer gasoline is lower so the gasoline will not evaporate too quickly and cause vapor lock or overload your fuel tank ventilation system during warm weather. It's easy to see that improperly blended gasoline could cause driveability complaints.

Another important property of gasoline is detergents. Detergents are used to keep your engine and fuel system clean, especially the fuel injecters and the intake valves.

Detergents are necessary in gasoline. If the gasoline you use has little or no detergent, carbon deposits could
form on the intake valves and cause driveability problems. Deposits from evaporating fuel can clog injecters. These deposits can reduce fuel output, which once again causes driveability problems and poor fuel economy.

Last, but not least, another important property of gasoline is the anti-knock quality otherwise known as octane rating.

A prerequisite for normal combustion in a gasoline engine is the use of gasoline with anti-knock qualities. The use of inadequate anti-knock qualities can cause pinging and engine knock. If knocking continues over a long period of time, engine damage can be a result, and any damage or malfunction due to poor fuel quality is not covered by the Audi New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

So what does all this mean?

Why is all this important to you?

During the 1970s, gasoline manufacturers were required to remove lead from most of their product. As a result, the octane ratings were lowered and volatility increased. Additionally, some manufacturers have lowered the quantity of detergents in their gasoline.

What can you do?

If you are experiencing some driveability problems, try a gasoline with a higher octane. Another suggestion would be to try a fuel additive which contains a detergent like our "Autobahn Gasoline Additive". This additive contains "Techron" which is a specially formulated ingredient that reduces fuel and carbon deposits.
