1988 5000 CS Turbo (CIS)
Fuel system, chemical cleaning
^ engine MUST be at operating temperature
CAUTION
Always use new sealing washers on connections to eliminate the possibility of fluid leakage while performing the cleaning operation.
^ remove intake air boot
^ center punch and drill (tamper-proof) CO plug, and remove
^ reinstall intake air boot
^ remove fuel pump relay from fuse/relay panel
^ disconnect fuel supply line at fuel distributor (control pressure regulator is connected to same banjo fitting)
^ disconnect control pressure regulator fuel line from banjo fitting and temporarily reroute fuel lines (to ensure accessibility)
The kit contains two adaptor lines. Choose the appropriate line depending on the type of fitting you are connecting to either banjo fitting or compression fitting.
^ reconnect control pressure line to banjo fitting
^ plug supply line by installing cap nut (from kit) onto threaded end of banjo bolt extending from supply line fitting
^ attach aerosol can adaptor line with shutoff valve (from kit) to fuel distributor inlet
^ disconnect fuel return line at fuel distributor
^ plug return line by installing cap nut (from kit) onto threaded end of banjo bolt which extends from disconnected return line
^ install plug into fuel distributor
The following steps should be performed smoothly WITHOUT pause. Any delay in starting after attaching the aerosol can could cause flooding and a no-start condition.
CAUTION
FLAMMABLE MATERIAL. Hold aerosol container upright, avoiding ALL electrical contact.
CORROSIVE MATERIAL. Do NOT allow to come in contact with painted surfaces or rubber hoses. Refer to label on container.
WARNING
Safety glasses MUST be worn while performing this work sequence.
^ thread aerosol container into fitting on (supply side) adaptor line
WARNING
Hand tighten ONLY.
CAUTION
Install exhaust vent on tail pipe to vent toxic fumes.
^ IMMEDIATELY start engine and run at approximately 3000 RPM until aerosol container is empty (engine will stop running after approximately 5 minutes)
If hard starting occurs, lift the sensor plate via the CO adjustment screw, using CO adjustment wrench P377.
^ repeat operation with a second container of cleaner
^ reinstallation is the reverse of the removal procedure
^ start engine
^ check idle speed and CO content, adjust if necessary
^ install new (tamper proof) CO plug
