Rear Axle Replace
QUATTRO COUPE & QUATTRO TURBO
1. Loosen wheel bolts.
2. Remove axle nut cover, then the axle nut.
3. Raise and support vehicle.
4. Remove wheel bolts and wheel.
5. Disconnect axle shaft from final drive flange and position aside.
6. Press off tie rod end using suitable tool. Axle shafts are diagonally interchangeable; left rear is identical with right front and right rear is identical with left front.
7. Remove ball joint clamp bolt.
8. Disconnect brake hose at bracket.
9. Pry ball joint out of hub and move strut toward outside.
10. Press out stub axle from hub, ensuring that there is sufficient clearance between inner constant velocity joint and final drive housing. Use only mechanical or hydraulic puller to remove stub axle. Never use hot air blower or flame to heat stub axle.
11. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Replace gasket on inner constant velocity joint.
b. Ensure that splines on stub axle and wheel hub are free of oil, grease and old locking compound.
c. Apply bead of suitable locking compound approximately 3/16 inch wide around splines and allow to harden for at least one hour.
d. Install stub axle.
e. Torque ball joint clamp nut to 47 ft.lbs., axle shaft to final drive attaching bolts to 58 ft.lbs., wheel bolts to 80 ft.lbs., and axle nut to 203 ft.lbs.
