Ball Joint: Service and Repair

4000 QUATTRO & QUATTRO TURBO

1. Remove wishbone joint as previously described.
2. Remove bolts from wheel bearing housing.
3. Insert two M8 x 40 mm bolts approximately one inch into wheel bearing housing.
4. Push preassembled tool 40-204A or equivalent over ball joint.
5. Attach joint mounting nut with large washer onto joint and tighten as far as possible.
6. Pull out ball joint by turning installed bolts counterclockwise one at a time. Before driving ball joint into place, align holes with wheel bearing housing.
7. Using tool VW415a or equivalent, drive ball joint into wheel bearing housing until seated.
8. Torque ball joint bolts to 29 ft.lbs.
9. Swivel control arm into place and torque ball joint nut to 54 ft.lbs.
10. Tighten control arm mountings with vehicle wheels resting on ground.
