Alternator Parts Replacement
Carbon brushes for alternator with voltage regulator, replacing
Carbon brush lengths:
^ new approx 13 mm (0.512 in), wear limit approx 5 mm (0.197 in)
V-belt tension, adjusting
a = 10-15 mm (0.394 to 0.59 in)
- loosen bolts (arrows)
- push alternator outward
- tighten bolts again
Alternator V-belt adjustment, using toothed rack mechanism
To adjust V-belt tension:
- loosen bolts B, C, and pivot bolt in cradle (not shown)
Note
The securing bolts should be loose enough for the alternator to swing freely under its own weight.
- tension the V-belt by rotating the tensioning gear hex, using a torque wrench and crowfoot until the specified torque is obtained
- tighten tensioning gear center bolt (B) while maintaining tension spec with torque wrench
- tighten bolt (C) securing alternator bracket to attachment eye
- tighten alternator pivot bolt securing alternator to cradle
Torque Specifications:
^ tensioning gear hex 9 +/- 1 N-m (6-7 ft.lbs)
^ bolt B 35 N-m (26 ft.lbs)
^ bolt C 20 N-m (15 ft.lbs)
^ pivot bolt 26 N-m (19 ft.lbs)
Note
Belt tension accuracy can be checked by using a belt tension gauge after performing the adjustment.
