Fuel Gauge, Speedometer Sensor & Boost Pressure Checks

Fuel Gauge Sender:

Fuel gauge display, checking
- remove trim panel from luggage compartment floor
- remove cover from fuel gauge sender (arrows)

Fuel Gauge Sender:

- disconnect terminal from fuel gauge sender (arrow)

Voltmeter Connections:

- connect voltmeter between contact 2 (V/BK) and contact 3 (BR/BK)
- switch ignition ON
^ 9.75-10.25 V
- switch ignition OFF

If specified value is not obtained, - repair break in wiring using current flow diagram or replace voltage stabilizer

CAUTION

When reinstalling connector, make sure that terminal blades do not get pushed out of connector.

VW 1301:

- connect VW 1301 between contact 2 (V/BK) and 3 (BR/BK) of fuel gauge sender connector
- adjust tester as follows:
^ empty = 544
^ full = 60
- switch ignition ON

Fuel Gauge Setting:

Fuel gauge setting must be within tolerance ranges (arrows) at A and B
^ 544 on tester = A
^ 60 on tester = B

Adjust Fuel Gauge:

Note

If there are slight deviations from test settings, - pull digital clock out of instrument panel
- adjust fuel gauge (arrow)

Speedometer Sensor (on transmission):

Speedometer sensor, checking
- pull electrical connector from speedometer sensor (on transmission)

Connector:

- connect voltmeter to outer contacts (1 and 3) of connector
- switch ignition ON
^ specified value: approx. 12.0 V
- switch ignition OFF

If specified value was not obtained, - repair break in wiring using current flow diagram

If specified value is obtained,

Speedometer Sensor:

- remove speedometer sensor from transmission
- reconnect electrical connector to speedometer sensor
- peel back rubber boot from electrical connector
- connect voltmeter between contact 2 and 3
- switch ignition ON
- turn shaft on speedometer sensor slowly clockwise
^ specified value: 0 to 8.0 V pulsing voltage
- switch ignition OFF

If specified value is NOT obtained, - replace speedometer sensor

If specified value is obtained, - remove instrument cluster (do not remove electrical connector)

Speedometer Sensor Connector:

Instrument Cluster Connector A - Yellow Band:

- check continuity between wire from contact 2 of speedometer sensor connector and contact 5 of instrument cluster connector A (yellow band)
^ specified value: approx. 0.0 ohm

If specified value is NOT obtained, - repair break in wiring

If specified value is obtained, - replace printed circuit or Board Computer

10 Point Computer Connector:

Boost pressure display, checking

Work sequence

- remove instrument cluster
- connect voltmeter between contact 5 of 10 point computer connector and ground
- start engine and let idle
^ specified value: 0.25 to 2.5 V

If specified value is obtained but there is no display on Board Computer, - check computer, pg. 15

If specified value is NOT obtained, - remove electronic ignition control unit cover in front passenger footwell
- pull connector from control unit

10 Point Computer Connector:

Electronic Ignition Control Unit Connector:

- check continuity between contact 5 of 10 point connector and contact 17 of electronic ignition control unit connector
^ specified value: 0.0 ohm

If specified value is NOT obtained, - repair break in wiring

If specified value is obtained and there is no display, - replace electronic ignition control unit
