Brakes ^ Steering

The hydraulic reservoir system must be cleaned whenever any hydraulic system component is replaced or if the reservoir system is contaminated.

CAUTION

Do not use solvent which could damage rubber hoses or seals when cleaning the hydraulic system components.

Use only clean solvent.

^ pump brake pedal 20-25 times (until pedal becomes hard) to bleed accumulator

^ remove return line from hydraulic brake servo to reservoir at servo (arrow A)
^ remove clamp from steering gear return hose at reservoir and carefully pull hose off (arrow B)
^ remove nuts/washers fastening reservoir bracket to engine compartment panel
^ pull reservoir assembly out toward front of vehicle

Note

The bracket can remain on the reservoir to reduce the possibility of breakage.

^ remove accumulator hose at bottom of reservoir (arrow C)
^ remove return line at reservoir (arrow D)
^ remove reservoir from vehicle with bracket and hose A attached
^ remove hose A from reservoir

^ use a bottle/thermos brush and clean reservoir with a suitable cleaning solvent
^ clean or replace strainer as necessary

Note

If the strainer cannot be thoroughly cleaned or is damaged, replace it with the new version strainer, Part No. 443 422 385 A.

CAUTION

Part Numbers are for reference only. Always consult with your Parts Department for latest information.

^ remove and clean all banjo bolts fastening hoses/lines to pump and accumulator
^ install reservoir assembly in vehicle and connect all hoses/lines disconnected during removal

CAUTION

Use only hydraulic fluid, Part No. G 002 000

DO NOT reuse hydraulic fluid that has been drained.

DO NOT turn front wheels unless the hydraulic system is filled with fluid. Damage to the steering rack could result if the wheels are turned after the hydraulic system has been emptied.

^ fill hydraulic reservoir up to MAX mark (arrow)
^ raise front of vehicle enough to take load off front wheels
^ start engine
^ watch hydraulic fluid level in reservoir until it drops and maintains constant level

CAUTION

DO NOT allow reservoir to empty.

^ turn steering wheel lock to lock several times quickly

Note

Do not use more force on steering wheel than necessary to turn wheels to lock position.

^ add more hydraulic fluid until level remains constant at MAX mark
