Wastegate
NOTE: Boost pressure must be present
- Boost pressure measurements are made while driving. For safety reasons it is necessary to take along a second person to read the gauge.
- engine oil temperature: minimum: 80°C (176°F)
- no leakage from vacuum connections
- remove kick panel trim on right side of footwell
- remove (ignition) vacuum advance hose from connection electronic ignition control unit
- connect pressure gauge VW 1397 with T-connection, between previously removed vacuum hose and ignition control unit
- place pressure gauge on front passenger seat
NOTE: Do not allow hose to become pinched or restricted in any way when placing gauge inside vehicle
- open shut-off valve on pressure gauge (arrow)
- accelerate vehicle from 35 MPH (56 KPH) at wide open throttle
- manual transmission - 3rd gear
- automatic transmission - 2nd gear
NOTE: Automatic transmission NOT in kickdown mode
- at 55 MPH (88 KPH) close shut-off valve on pressure gauge VW 1397 (arrow) and read pressure on gauge, (correct pressures are based on altitude)
If specified values are obtained:
- possible cause of problem could be K-Jetronic or ignition system
- also check control unit fault memory
If specified values are not obtained:
- check control of wastegate valve, if necessary perform a trial replacement
- if value is still not obtained, reinstall original enrichment housing, perform trial replacement of blow-off valve
- if value is still not obtained, replace turbocharger
