Valve Clearance: Adjustments
NOTE: Valves should be adjusted only when the cylinder head temperature is less than 100°F (38°C).1. Remove the rear engine compartment cover.
2. Remove the wire harness clamps from the strut brace, then remove the strut brace.
3. Remove the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) control canister hose, breather hose and vacuum hose, then remove the intake air duct.
4. Remove the throttle body cover.
5. Remove the throttle cable and cruise control cable by loosening the locknuts, then slip the cable ends out of the throttle linkage.
6. Remove the brake booster vacuum hose, vacuum hoses and Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose.
7. Remove the vacuum hose, breather hose and water bypass hoses.
8. Remove the intake manifold.
9. Remove the cylinder head covers.
10. Remove the front upper cover.
11. Set the No. 1 piston at TDC. Align the pointer on the back cover with the No. 1 piston TDC mark on the front camshaft pulley.
12. Adjust the valves on the No. 1 cylinder. Loosen the locknut, and turn the adjusting screw until the feeler gauge slides back and forth with a slight amount of drag.
Intake: 0.20 - 0.24 mm (0.008 - 0.009 inch)
Exhaust: 0.28 - 0.32 mm (0.011 - 0.013 inch)
13. Tighten the locknut, and check the clearance again. Repeat the adjustment if necessary.
14. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise. Check that the front cant Rep shaft pulley is positioned as shown. Repeat steps 12 and 13.
15. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise. Check that the front camshaft pulley is positioned as shown. Repeat steps 12 and 13.
16. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise. Check that the front camshaft pulley is positioned as shown. Repeat steps 12 and 13.
17. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise. Check that the front camshaft pulley is positioned as shown. Repeat steps 12 and 13.
18. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise. Check that the front camshaft pulley is positioned as shown. Repeat steps 12 and 13.
