Power Seat Noise

SYMPTOM
The power seat makes a growling or rattling noise while moving forward or backward.

PROBABLE CAUSE
Lack of lubrication on the synchronizer cable.

CORRECTIVE ACTION
Lubricate the synchronizer cable with DC-111 silicone grease.

REQUIRED MATERIALS
DC-111 Silicone Grease (Call Dow Corning at 800-248-2481 to find your nearest Dow Corning distributor.)

DIAGNOSIS

While moving the seat forward or backward, reach under the front of the seat and apply light pressure to the synchronizer cable cover with your hand. It the noise changes, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE. If there is no change, inspect the seat tracks for wear or damage.

REPAIR PROCEDURE





1. Remove the three seat track end covers and the four seat mounting bolts. Leave all electrical
2. Raise the seat to its highest position, front and rear.
3. Move the seat to its full rearward position.
4. Move the seat-back to its most forward position.
5. Cover the left door sill molding with a fender cover or shop towel.





6. Lift the seat up, and carefully set the left side of the seat base on the door sill.





7. Remove the recline cover and the up-down outer cover.





8. Remove the two Torx bolts from the left front pivot, then remove the two Torx bolts from the center pivot.
9. Place the seat in its proper mounting position, and install the left front mounting bolt.





10. Tilt the seat toward the rear of the vehicle, approximately 8 inches.
11. Remove the synchronizer cable and cover from the drive motor and slave transmission.





12. Pull the cable out of the cover, and clean the cable with a rag.
13. Apply a thin layer of DC-ill silicone grease to the synchronizer cable (see REQUIRED MATERIALS). Do not overgrease the cable.
14. Insert the cable into the cable cover, and wipe oft any excess grease.
15. Tilt the seat toward the rear of the vehicle, approximately 8 inches.
16. Insert the synchronizer cable and cover into the drive motor. Make sure the square drive end of the cable is engaged with the drive motor.
17. While letting the seat-back slowly come forward, insert the other end of the synchronizer cable and cover into the slave transmission.
18. Remove the left front mounting bolt installed in step 9.
19. With the door sill still protected, lift the seat up and carefully set the left side of the seat base on the door sill.
20. Reinstall the two center pivot mounting bolts and the two left front pivot mounting bolts. Torque the bolts to 9 N-m (7 lb-ft).
21. Reinstall the up-down cover and the recline cover.
22. Reinstall the seat. Torque the seat mounting bolts to 34 N-m (25 lb-ft).
23. Test the operation of the seat, and confirm that the noise is gone.
