Instrument Panel Squeak
(Supersedes 97-028, dated August 26, 1997)
SYMPTOM
A squeak from the instrument panel when driving on rough roads.
PROBABLE CAUSE
^ The meter cover behind the gauge assembly is rubbing against the gauge assembly or the air duct. [NEW]
^ The instrument panel is rubbing against the visor, the lens, or the dashboard pad.
CORRECTIVE ACTION [NEW]
For vehicles built after the following affected VINs, apply EPT Sealer to the meter cover only
2.2CL: 19UYA1...VL020733
3.0CL: 19UYA2 ...VL011871
For vehicles built up to the VINs listed above, apply EPT Sealer to the meter cover and replace the padding on the instrument panel with wool felt.

REQUIRED MATERIALS
EPT 3T Sealer: P/N 06990-SA5-000 [NEW]
Wool Felt: P/N 06993-SA5-000
REPAIR PROCEDURE
Applying EPT Sealer to the Meter Cover [NEW]
1. Remove the instrument panel and gauge assembly. Refer to page 20-46 and 23-53 of the 1997 2.2CL Service Manual. Do not damage the trip meter reset button.
2. Cut two 25 x 60 mm pieces of EPT sealer.
3. Apply one piece to the bottom Center edge of the meter cover.
4. Apply the other piece behind the upper right comer of the meter cover.
5. Reinstall the gauge assembly.
6. If the VIN of the vehicle is lower than the affected VIN range, inspect the instrument panel to see if wool felt pieces have been installed already. If they haven't been installed, go to step 7. Otherwise, reinstall the instrument panel.*
Replacing the Padding on the instrument Panel
7. Cut three pieces of wool felt, each 15 x 100 mm.
8. Cut one piece of wool felt, 12 x 740 mm.
9. Remove the existing padding strips from the instrument panel.
10. Apply the pieces of wool felt to the instrument panel in the places shown.
11. Reinstall the instrument panel. Make sure no wool felt can be seen sticking out.
