Power Steering Pressure Check With T/N 07406-001000A

NOTE: Check the fluid pressure as follows to determine whether the trouble is in the pump or gearbox. First check the power steering fluid level and pump belt tension.

CAUTION: Disconnect the pump outlet hose (high-pressure) with care so as not to spill the power steering fluid on the frame and other parts.

1. Disconnect the pump outlet hose from the pump outlet, then install the P/S joint adapter (pump) on the pump outlet with the P/S joint adapter plate.

2. Connect the P/S joint adapter (hose) to the P/S pressure gauge, then connect the outlet hose to the P/S joint adapter (hose).
3. Install the P/S pressure gauge to the P/S joint adapter (pump).

4. Open the pressure control valve fully.
5. Start the engine and let it idle.
6. Turn the steering wheel from lock-to-lock several times to warm the fluid to operating temperature.
7. Measure steady-state fluid pressure while the engine is idling. If the pump is in good condition, the gauge should read 1,500 kPa (213 psi). If it reads high, check the outlet hose or valve body unit.
8. Gradually close the pressure control valve and immediately read the pressure.

CAUTION: Do not keep the pressure control valve closed more than 5 seconds or the pump could be damaged by over-heating.

9. Open the pressure control valve fully. If the pump is in good condition, the gauge should read at least 7,500 - 8,190 kPa (1,090-1,190 psi). A low reading means pump output is too low for full assist. Repair or replace the pump.
