Product Update: Hood Release Cable
BACKGROUND
The hood release cable may be misrouted, allowing it to rub against the radiator. If so, the cable may damage the radiator and cause a coolant leak.

Not all vehicles within these affected VIN ranges are eligible for this campaign. Verity the vehicle's eligibility before beginning any repairs.
Customer has a campaign letter - If the customer comes in with a product update campaign letter (see the example at the end of this service bulletin), repair the vehicle and file a warranty claim. Attach a copy of the letter to the repair order.
No letter - If a customer brings in a 1997 CL for service and does not have a letter, verify that the vehicle is eligible for this campaign.
^ If it is outside the VIN ranges given, it is not eligible and no repair is needed.
^ If it is within the VIN ranges given, verify its eligibility:
- A VIN Status Inquiry on DCS shows the vehicle is affected.
- The VIN is on your Campaign Responsibility Report.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
All owners of affected vehicles will be mailed a notification of the product update campaign. An example of the customer letter is in this service bulletin.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Inspect the routing of the hood release cable, and anchor the cable with a cable tie. If necessary, paint the radiator to protect it.
PARTS INFORMATION
Cable tie: P/N 32132-5M4-003
REQUIRED MATERIALS
Plastikote Spray Enamel:
2.2CL - P/N 215, Low Gloss Black
3.0CL - P/N 207, Aluminum
Purchase locally at an automotive or building supply store.
WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Open the hood.
2. Check the routing of the hood release cable.
^ If the cable is properly routed inside the bulkhead, go to step 4.
^ If the cable is not properly routed inside the bulkhead, continue to step 3.
3. Tuck the cable up into the bulkhead so it no longer interferes with the radiator.
4. Install the cable tie (see PARTS INFORMATION).
5. Inspect the top part of the radiator for signs of damage from contact by the hood release cable.
^ If there are no signs of damage, center-punch the VIN, and return the car to the customer. If there are signs of damage, go to the appropriate radiator painting procedure.
RADIATOR PAINTING 2.2CL
1. Remove the upper radiator mounting brackets and cushions.
2. Unclip the A/C line from the upper radiator hose.
3. Remove the A/C line bracket mounting bolts from the radiator bulkhead. Pivot the bracket up and back.
4. Push the top of the radiator back toward the engine.
5. Clean up any dirt and debris in the top part of the radiator. Dry the radiator thoroughly.
6. Paint the cable contact area of the radiator (see REQUIRED MATERIALS).
7. Reinstall the A/C line bracket, the mounting brackets and cushions, and clip the A/C line to the upper radiator hose.
8. Center-punch a completion mark above the first character of the engine compartment VIN.
RADIATOR PAINTING - 3.0CL
1. Remove the front engine compartment cover (7 clips).
2. Remove the upper radiator mounting brackets and cushions.
3. Push the top of the radiator back toward the engine.
4. Clean up any dirt and debris in the top part of the radiator. Dry the radiator thoroughly.
5. Paint the cable contact area of the radiator (see REQUIRED MATERIALS).
6. Reinstall the mounting brackets and cushions, and the engine compartment cover.
7. Center-punch a completion mark above the first character of the engine compartment VIN.
