Removal






NOTE:
- Mark the direction of rotation on the belt before removing it.
- Do not use the upper covers and lower cover to store removed items.
- Clean the upper covers and lower cover before installing them.
- Replace the camshaft seals and crankshaft seals if there is oil leakage.

CAUTION:
- Turn the crankshaft pulley so the No. 1 piston is at Top Dead Center (TDC) before removing the belt.
- Inspect the water pump before installing the timing belt.
- Replace the timing belt at 105,000 miles (168,000 km) according to the maintenance schedule (normal conditions/severe conditions). If the vehicle is regularly driven in one or more of the following conditions, replace the timing belt at 60,000 miles (100,000 km).
- In very high temperatures (over 110°F, 43°C)
- In very low temperatures (under - 20°F, - 29°C)

PROCEDURE
1. Remove the splash shield.
2. Move the auto-tensioner to remove tension from the alternator belt, then remove the alternator belt.





3. Loosen the adjusting bolt, locknut and mounting bolt, then remove the Power Steering (P/S) pump belt.





4. Remove the dipstick and tube.
5. Remove the side engine mount.

NOTE:
- Support the engine before removing the side engine mount with a jack.
- Make sure to place a cushion between the oil pan and the jack.

6. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
7. Remove the upper and lower covers.

NOTE: Do not use the upper and lower covers to store removed items.





8. Remove one of the battery clamp bolts from the battery tray, and grind the end of it as shown.





9. To hold the timing belt adjuster in its current position, thread in the battery clamp bolt hand tight.

NOTE: Hand tighten the battery clamp bolt only, do not use any tools.





10. Loosen the idler pulley bolt about five or six turns, then remove the timing belt.
