NOTE: Install the cylinder head in the reverse order of removal.- Always use a new head gasket.
- Cylinder head and cylinder block surface must be clean.
- Turn the camshaft so the No. 1 piston is at TDC.
- Turn the crankshaft so the No. 1 piston is at TDC.
- Clean the oil control orifice before installing.

- Clean the upper covers and lower cover before installation.
1. Install the dowel pins, oil control orifices and cylinder head gaskets.
2. Position the camshaft correctly.
3. Apply clean engine oil to the threads and flange of the cylinder head bolts.
Head Tightening Sequence:
4. Tighten the cylinder head bolts sequentially in three steps.
NOTE: Perform each step twice.
- 1st step torque: 39.0 Nm (29.0 ft. lbs.)
- 2nd step torque: 69.0 Nm (51.0 ft. lbs.)
- 3rd step torque: 98.1 Nm (72.3 ft. lbs.)
NOTE:
- We recommend using a beam-type torque wrench. When using a preset-type torque wrench, be sure to tighten slowly and not to overtighten.
- If a bolt makes any noise while you are torquing it, loosen the bolt, and retighten it from the 1st step.
5. Install the exhaust manifold and tighten the nuts in a crisscross pattern in two or three steps, beginning with the inner nut.
- Always use a new exhaust manifold gasket.
6. Install exhaust pipe A and bracket, then install the cover.
7. Install the timing belt.
8. Adjust the valve clearance.
9. Install the cylinder head cover.
NOTE:
- Before installing the cylinder head cover, clean the cylinder head contacting surfaces with a shop towel.
- Take care not to damage the spark plug seal when installing the cylinder head.
- Visually check the spark plug seal for damage.
- Replace the washer when damaged or deteriorated.
10. Tighten the valve cover nuts in two or three steps. In the final step, tighten all nuts, shown in image sequence, to 12 Nm (107 in. lbs.).
NOTE: After assembly, wait at least 20 minutes before filling the engine with oil.
11. Install the intake manifold Tighten the 8 x 1.25 mm bolts and nuts sequentially in two or three steps to 22 Nm (16 ft. lbs.).
- Always use a new intake manifold gasket.
12. After installation, check that all tubes, hoses and connectors are installed correctly.
